Here are some simple rules to help you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule: <\/strong>When you use the complete names of departments, capitalize. You may also capitalize a shortened form of a department. Do not capitalize when these words are used as adjectives or generically.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<br \/>\n<\/strong>the United Nations General Assembly<br \/>\nthe General Assembly<br \/>\nCongress<br \/>\na congressional committee<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong> Capitalize civil titles only when used with the name following or when addressing someone directly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples: <\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Councilman James Harris<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the councilman<\/em><br \/>\n<em>James Harris, councilman<\/em><br \/>\n<em>How are you voting, Councilman?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>President Biden<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the president<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong> If you are working on government documents or you are representing a government agency, then you may capitalize words like <em>City, County<\/em>, and <em>District <\/em>when they stand alone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> <em>The County will implement the plan approved by the voters last June.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong> When you refer back to a proper noun using a shortened version of the original name, you may capitalize it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>The District Water Plan allocates \u2026 The Plan calls for \u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken the case.
