{"id":847,"date":"2012-11-24T12:41:11","date_gmt":"2012-11-24T18:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.grammarbook.com\/blog\/?p=847"},"modified":"2021-11-24T10:03:09","modified_gmt":"2021-11-24T16:03:09","slug":"commas-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grammarbook.com\/blog\/commas\/commas-part-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Commas with Adjectives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this lesson, we&#8217;ll examine a more advanced concept for using the comma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong> Use a comma to separate two adjectives when the adjectives are interchangeable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>He is a strong, healthy man.<\/em><br \/>\nWe could also say a <em>healthy, strong man<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>We stayed at an expensive summer resort.<\/em><br \/>\nWe would not say <em>summer expensive resort<\/em>, so no comma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> Words ending in <em>-ly<\/em> are not always adverbs. Many adjectives also end in <em>-ly<\/em> (e.g., <em>lonely, friendly, kindly<\/em> (may be an adverb or an adjective), <em>family<\/em> (may be a noun or an adjective). To test whether an <em>-ly<\/em> word is an adjective, see if it can be used alone with the noun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Felix was a lonely, confused boy.<\/em> (Lonely <em>is an adjective because it can be used alone with<\/em> boy.)<br \/>\n<em>I get headaches in brightly lit rooms.<\/em> (Brightly <em>is not an adjective because it cannot be used alone with<\/em> rooms; <em>therefore, no comma is used between<\/em> brightly <em>and<\/em> lit.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pop Quiz<\/strong><br \/>\nChoose the sentence with the correct punctuation.
