We also express their timing in the present, past,\u00a0or future through their tense: e.g., <em>practice<\/em>, <em>practiced<\/em>, <em>will practice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond establishing timing, we further treat verbs to indicate their open or closed nature within their tense. In other words, how does the action extend or not extend during a particular time? In English grammar, this is determined by the aspect of a verb.<\/p>\n<p>Where tense tells us when an action occurs, the aspect further informs us about the action&#8217;s duration. For example, if it started in the past, is it still acting in the present, or did it act for a while and then stop before the present?<\/p>\n<h2>Verbs: Four Aspects<\/h2>\n<p>Verbs have four aspects: simple, perfect, progressive, and perfect progressive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple aspect<\/strong> states an action without indicating its length of time or continuation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Jameson <u>practiced<\/u> shooting baskets.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Progressive aspect<\/strong> communicates a continuing action:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Jameson <u>is practicing<\/u> shooting baskets because he wants to be a better scorer. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Perfect aspect<\/strong> describes the relation between an earlier action and a later time:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Jameson <u>has practiced<\/u> shooting baskets because he wants to be a better scorer. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Perfect progressive aspect<\/strong> expresses a past ongoing action that may be complete or incomplete before another suggested or identified time:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Jameson <u>has been practicing<\/u> shooting baskets to prepare for tonight&#8217;s game.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Aspect and Tense Examples<\/h2>\n<p>Now that we understand what verb aspect is, let&#8217;s look more at how each type correlates with the tenses of the verb <em>to practice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<table class=\"border\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><strong>Simple Aspect<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"35%\">Present tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson practices.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Past tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson practiced.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Future tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson will practice.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table class=\"border\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><strong>Progressive Aspect<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"35%\">Present tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson is practicing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Past tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson was practicing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Future tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson will be practicing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table class=\"border\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><strong>Perfect Aspect<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"35%\">Present tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson has practiced.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Past tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson had practiced.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Future tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson will have practiced.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table class=\"border\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><strong>Perfect Progressive Aspect<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"35%\">Present tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson has been practicing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Past tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson had been practicing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Future tense<\/td>\n<td>Jameson will have been practicing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Another View of Grammatical Aspect<\/h2>\n<p>Some grammar resources might also observe verb aspect as two categories rather than four: perfective and imperfective.<\/p>\n<p>Within these condensed classifications, simple and perfect aspect would fall under perfective aspect, and progressive and perfect progressive aspect would be grouped with imperfective aspect.<\/p>\n<p>Perfective aspect (simple, perfect) signifies an action with a sense of completion or containment: <em>has practiced<\/em>,<em> had practiced<\/em>,<em> will have practiced.<\/em> It does not convey a flow or extension of time or maintained activity.<\/p>\n<p>Imperfective aspect (progressive, perfect progressive) describes an action that continues or repeats within its tense: <em>is practicing, was practicing, had been practicing.<\/em> It applies to events that are happening, have happened, or will happen.<\/p>\n<h2>Aspect: Reinforcing Example<\/h2>\n<p>With our understanding refined even further, let&#8217;s review another example of how aspect and tense combine to give us greater insight into a verb&#8217;s action.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Verb:<\/strong> to paint<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple aspect, past tense:<\/strong> Lila painted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Progressive aspect, past tense:<\/strong> Lila was painting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perfect aspect, past tense:<\/strong> Lila had painted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perfect progressive aspect, past tense:<\/strong> Lila had been painting.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As you can see, we know each action took place in the past. The aspect gives us more context about the actions.<\/p>\n<p>With simple aspect, we know only Lila painted something. It is a limited thought without a sense of scope or duration.<\/p>\n<p>With progressive aspect, we understand that Lila was in the continuing process of painting. The thought is open with a sense of motion.<\/p>\n<p>With perfect aspect, we infer a resolute closure of the action.
