{"id":65,"date":"2020-03-24T07:00:42","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T12:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.grammarbook.com\/blog\/?p=65"},"modified":"2021-02-18T11:27:15","modified_gmt":"2021-02-18T17:27:15","slug":"pronoun-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grammarbook.com\/blog\/pronouns\/pronoun-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Pronoun Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pronouns take the place of nouns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Subject pronouns:<\/strong> <em>I<\/em>, <em>you<\/em>, <em>he<\/em>, <em>she<\/em>, <em>it<\/em>, <em>we<\/em>, <em>they<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Object pronouns:<\/strong> <em>me<\/em>, <em>you<\/em>, <em>him<\/em>, <em>her<\/em>, <em>it<\/em>, <em>us<\/em>, <em>them<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong> Use a subject pronoun, not only as the subject of a sentence, but after <em>to be<\/em> verbs when the pronoun renames the subject.<br \/>\n<strong><em><br \/>\nTo be<\/em> verbs:<\/strong> <em>is<\/em>, <em>are<\/em>, <em>was<\/em>, were, <em>will be<\/em>, <em>may be<\/em>, <em>may have been<\/em>, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> <em>He<\/em> is my friend.<br \/>\n<em>He<\/em> is the subject of the sentence, so use a subject pronoun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> Enrique and <em>she<\/em> are friends.<br \/>\n<em>Enrique<\/em> and <em>she<\/em> are the subjects of the sentence.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nExample:<\/strong> <em>It<\/em> is <em>I<\/em> who called.<br \/>\n<em>I<\/em> comes after the <em>to be<\/em> verb <em>is<\/em> and renames the subject <em>it<\/em>. Therefore, use the subject pronoun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong> Use an object pronoun when the pronoun is the direct object, the indirect object, or the object of the preposition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> Ella met <em>him<\/em> at the restaurant.<br \/>\n<em>Him<\/em> is the direct object.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> Ella will give <em>him<\/em> his money back.<br \/>\n<em>Him<\/em> is an indirect object because you can mentally put the word <em>to<\/em> in front of it. <em>Money<\/em> is the direct object.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> Between <em>you<\/em> and <em>me<\/em>, this will never work.<br \/>\n<em>You<\/em> and <em>me<\/em> are the objects of the preposition <em>between<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong> Use reflexive pronouns\u2014<em>myself<\/em>, <em>himself<\/em>, <em>herself<\/em>, <em>itself<\/em>, <em>themselves<\/em>, <em>ourselves<\/em>, <em>yourself<\/em>, <em>yourselves<\/em>\u2014to refer back to another noun or pronoun in the sentence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Correct:<\/strong> <em>I<\/em> did it <em>myself<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Incorrect:<\/strong> Please give it to Butri or <em>myself<\/em>.<br \/>\nIn this sentence, <em>myself<\/em> does not refer back to another noun or pronoun.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pronouns take the place of nouns.
