In this article we&#8217;ll give you the answers you need.<\/p>\n<h2>The Meaning of <em>Alternate<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>Alternate<\/em>\u00a0can be used as\u00a0a noun, a verb,\u00a0or an adjective.<\/p>\n<p>As a noun, it means &#8220;one thing that can substitute for another&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I wasn&#8217;t chosen for the debate team, but I will serve as an<\/em>\u00a0<em><u>alternate<\/u>\u00a0if another debater is unavailable.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a verb, <em>alternate<\/em> means &#8220;to go back and forth&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The weather will<\/em>\u00a0<em><u>alternate<\/u>\u00a0between sun and rain each day next week.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As an adjective, <em>alternate<\/em> means &#8220;constituting a replacement&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>While driving home, we took the<\/em>\u00a0<u><em>alternate<\/em><\/u>\u00a0<em>route instead of the highway.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The Meaning of <em>Alternative<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The word <em>alternative<\/em> is similar to <em>alternate<\/em>, but it has a slightly different meaning. It can be used as both a noun and an adjective in referring to different choices or possibilities. Here are a couple of examples:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Sheila wanted to remove sugar and butter from her cake recipe but couldn&#8217;t find any suitable<\/em>\u00a0<u><em>alternatives<\/em><\/u>\u00a0(noun).<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><u><em>Alternative<\/em><\/u><em>\u00a0<\/em>(adjective)\u00a0<em>medicine offers different solutions to the open-minded.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One good way to remember the difference is to use a metaphor. If you were looking at a chessboard, you would see a pattern of <em>alternate<\/em> light and dark squares.
