The prefix <em>re<\/em> can make hyphenating even more of a head-scratching experience. However, there is really only one rule that you need to learn to determine when to hyphenate with <em>re<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule: <\/strong>Use the hyphen with the prefix <em>re<\/em> only when<em> re<\/em> means <em>again<\/em> AND omitting the hyphen would cause confusion with another word.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> <em>Will she recover from her illness?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Re<\/em> does not mean <em>again<\/em> so no hyphen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> <em>I have re-covered the sofa twice. <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Re<\/em> does mean <em>again<\/em> AND omitting the hyphen would have caused confusion with another word so hyphenate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> <em>The stamps have been reissued. <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Re<\/em> means <em>again<\/em> but would not cause confusion with another word so no hyphen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> <em>I must re-press the shirt. <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Re<\/em> means <em>again<\/em> AND omitting the hyphen would cause confusion with another word so hyphenate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pop Quiz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Select the correct answer:<br \/>\n1A.
