A car drives past outside. You turn to the person behind you and say, \u201cI saw the car drive down the street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why didn\u2019t you say, \u201cI saw a car drive down the street\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>The reason is that the articles <em><a href=\"\/blog\/effective-writing\/a-or-an\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a\/an<\/a><\/em> and <em>the<\/em> communicate definition or a lack thereof.<\/p>\n<p>We use <em>a\/an <\/em>when we want to identify:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a non-particular person or thing:<br \/>\nDenise wants a kitten for her birthday. (a kitten in general, not a particular one)<\/li>\n<li>an indefinite person or thing within a larger group or category:<br \/>\na child on the playground during lunchtime (one child among many)<\/li>\n<li>something we don\u2019t need to specify for knowledge or clarity:<br \/>\nI caught a plane to California. (a general reference, or one plane among others with the same destination)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also use <em>an<\/em> instead of <em>a <\/em>when the word following begins with a vowel sound: an egg, an omelet, an institute, an honor. <em>A <\/em>will always be followed by a word that starts with a consonant sound: a box, a trampoline, a hero, a unique opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>We apply <em>the, <\/em>on the other hand, when we want to distinguish:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a particular person or thing known:<br \/>\nDenise wants the kitten for her birthday. (a specific kitten she\u2019s identified or <em>the kitten<\/em> instead of <em>the puppy<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>a definite person or thing within a larger group or category:<br \/>\nthe child on the playground during lunchtime (recognition of a particular child)<\/li>\n<li>something we need to specify for knowledge or clarity:<br \/>\nI caught the plane to California. (a reference to a particular flight or perhaps the only one)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Implementing what we\u2019ve established, let\u2019s return to your front window at home, where you could have just as well said you saw <em>a <\/em>car instead of <em>the<\/em> car.<\/p>\n<p>But you didn\u2019t, because you identified it as a particular thing known (the car delivering pizza to your neighbor\u2019s party), a definite thing within a larger category (the only Porsche among your neighborhood\u2019s many cars), or something you needed to specify for understanding (the car in which your daughter is returning from college).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The English article: It seems simple enough, but sometimes it carries just enough nuance to prompt a review of linguistic accuracy.
