As we noted at the time, the usage of\u00a0<i>alright<\/i>\u00a0\u201cremains unacceptable across the board in serious writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then we\u2019ve discovered yet another adversary gunning for <em>all right<\/em>: films with subtitles. For whatever reason, subtitled films invariably insist on <em>alright<\/em>. We don\u2019t know where films go to be subtitled, but apparently Subtitle Central has decided that <em>alright<\/em>\u2019s time has arrived. We\u2019ll see about that.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, here is the next in our occasional series of spelling tests. Note that first <em>u<\/em>. A lot of people think the word is \u201cminiscule.\u201d And it makes sense that a word for <em>tiny<\/em> would have a <em>mini<\/em> in it. In this case, don\u2019t think <em>mini<\/em>, think <em>minus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2<\/strong>: D) <em>cinnamon<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>3<\/strong>: A) <em>straitjacket<\/em>. It\u2019s commonly spelled with a <em>straight<\/em>, which is understandable. Wouldn\u2019t a \u201cstraightjacket\u201d be just the thing to straighten you up and straighten you out?<\/p>\n<p><strong>4<\/strong>: C) <em>barbecue<\/em>. People want to put a <em>q<\/em> where the <em>c<\/em> should be. The popular abbreviation, <em>BBQ<\/em>, doesn\u2019t help matters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5<\/strong>: B) <em>marshal<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>6<\/strong>: B) <em>a cappella<\/em>.
