Put words that are being added to an original quote within brackets. Always put the changes in brackets, not parentheses. This tells your readers exactly how you have altered the original.<br \/>\n<strong>Example:<\/strong><br \/>\nOriginal: She said, &#8220;I found their services invaluable.&#8221;<br \/>\nAmended: She said, &#8220;I found their [IT] services invaluable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use #2:<\/strong> Use brackets as parentheses within parentheses. You will see this with bibliographic references.<br \/>\n<strong>Example:<\/strong> (For more on the topic, see <em>The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation<\/em> [2014].) <\/p>\n<p><strong>Use #3:<\/strong> Use brackets to show the pronunciation of a word.<br \/>\n<strong>Example:<\/strong> He mispronounced <em>mischievous<\/em> [mis-chuh-vuhs].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use #4:<\/strong> Use brackets surrounding <em>sic<\/em> and italicize it.
