But is the use of <em>i.e.<\/em> precise? Let&#8217;s discuss that.<\/p>\n<h2><em> i.e.<\/em> versus <em>e.g.<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>i.e. <\/em>and <em>e.g. <\/em>are both abbreviations of Latin expressions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>id est (i.e.)<\/em>: &#8220;that is to say; in other words; by which I mean&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>exempl\u012b gr\u0101ti\u0101 (e.g.)<\/em>: &#8220;for example&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The abbreviation <em>i.e. <\/em>restates or fully lists what precedes it. It identifies, amplifies, clarifies, or specifies to remove all doubt about what the previous statement is saying.<\/p>\n<p>The abbreviation <em>e.g. <\/em>gives one or a few examples from a larger grouping. It helps to illustrate a preceding thought but does not restate, list, or summarize it.<\/p>\n<p>In our potluck example above, we can safely assume that the dinner selections might include more than just salads, appetizers, and desserts (<em>i.e.<\/em>, the foods cited represent a larger group as opposed to the full list). The correct reference therefore would be <em>e.g.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Note that because we are identifying partial information by way of example, we would not include <em>etc. <\/em>with an <em>e.g.<\/em> reference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Correct: <\/strong>Please bring something to the potluck dinner (<u>e.g.<\/u>, salad, appetizer, dessert).<br \/>\n<strong>Incorrect: <\/strong>Please bring something to the potluck dinner (<u>e.g.<\/u>, salad, appetizer, dessert, <u>etc.<\/u>).<\/p>\n<h2>Mnemonic Devices<\/h2>\n<p>As we&#8217;ve touched on, remembering that <em>i.e<\/em>. stands for <em>id est <\/em>and <em>e.g.<\/em> stands for <em>exempl\u012b gr\u0101ti\u0101 <\/em>is one way to recall the difference between the abbreviations.<\/p>\n<p>Another memory device can be to note that the <em>est <\/em>in <em>id est <\/em>means &#8220;is&#8221; (part of &#8220;that is&#8221;). For remembering the proper use of <em>e.g.,<\/em> you might recall the <em>exempl\u012b <\/em>meaning &#8220;example&#8221; in &#8220;for example.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If the Latin devices don&#8217;t suit you, another technique can be to think of <em>i.e.<\/em> as &#8220;in effect&#8221; and <em>e.g.<\/em> as &#8220;example given.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><em>i.e. <\/em>and <em>e.g.<\/em>: Punctuation Usage<\/h2>\n<p>In formal writing in the U.S., a leading tendency is to follow the abbreviations with a comma and enclose the text in parentheses.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Examples<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nMacy said she&#8217;d join us at the tavern at 6:30 p.m. (<u>i.e.<\/u>, 7:00 in Macy time).<\/p>\n<p>Please bring something to the potluck dinner (<u>e.g.<\/u>, salad, appetizer, dessert).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In recent years, some editors have allowed the comma to be omitted. This might be seen more often in less-formal contexts such as marketing content.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Examples<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll love how your face feels with the new Guide-n-Glide razor (<u>i.e.<\/u> handsome, fresh, and clean).<\/p>\n<p>Larry the Lawn Guy beautifies what you have on your landscape (<u>e.g.<\/u> trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If the text following the abbreviation is a full sentence, the abbreviation would be preceded by a semicolon and the following text would not be enclosed by parentheses.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Examples<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll love how your face feels with the new Guide-n-Glide razor; <u>i.e.,<\/u> it will feel handsome, fresh, and clean. (Style choice is no comma after <em>e.g.<\/em>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To remove all doubt of intended meaning and usage, some language stylists might even prefer that <em>i.e. <\/em>and <em>e.g.<\/em> not be used at all; rather, they will advise the full spelling of the phrases in English (<em>that is to say, in other words<\/em>;<em> for example<\/em>). The phrases would be followed by a comma.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Examples<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nMacy said she&#8217;d join us at the tavern at 6:30 p.m. (<u>in other words<\/u>, 7:00 in Macy time).<\/p>\n<p>Please bring something to the potluck dinner (<u>for example<\/u>, salad, appetizer, dessert).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t already adhere to a particular stylebook or in-house guideline, you can choose the format that suits you best and remain consistent with it.<\/p>\n<h2>Comparing <em>i.e. <\/em>and <em>e.g.<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Now that we&#8217;ve considered the Latin origins, mnemonic devices, and punctuation of the abbreviations, we&#8217;ll reinforce the understanding of <em>i.e.<\/em> and <em>e.g.<\/em> with one more illustration:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Certain members of my family (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">i.e.<\/span>, Mom and Uncle Jake) are vegetarians<\/em>.<br \/>\n<em>Certain members of my family (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">e.g.<\/span>, Mom and Uncle Jake) are vegetarians<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the first sentence, the <em>i.e.<\/em> tells us that Mom and Uncle Jake are the only family members who don&#8217;t eat meat.<\/p>\n<p>By including <em>e.g.<\/em>, the second sentence indicates the family includes vegetarians beyond Mom and Uncle Jake; they are just two examples of several vegetarians.<\/p>\n<p>The distinction between the two sentences is noteworthy, and it proves that using <em>i.e.<\/em> or <em>e.g.<\/em> can sometimes require careful thought about intent.
